My condolences to all of Jim's family. He was truly a great man, and a friend in the woods. I got to know Jim when Jerry Zimmeth brought him up to our farm in Park Rapids to deer hunt. He very quickly became a valued addition at deer camp. A favorite story would be from his first-year hunting. Jim shot a deer and began the process of dragging it back to the trail. After a couple hours following his compass, he was exhausted, but luckily saw my father in his stand. Jim – excited to find another hunter, asked what the quickest way out of the wood would be. Dad explained that the way he was going the quickest was another 10 miles, or he could turn right and the trail was 100 yards away. Jim had inadvertently missed the memo that the trail ran east and west. I do believe that he was reminded of the trail direction for many years to come! His love of family, patience, and always up beat demeaner will remain with me forever.
