It was heartbreaking to learn that Sondra has passed. We have been friends for almost 50 years. We met at Hennepin County Economic Assistance where we worked in the same unit as Eligibility Technicians. We stayed in contact over the years even though we each moved to new jobs. We continued to meet for lunch downtown while we both worked there & then maintained contact within a group of friends for years. Our husbands got to know each other some during our younger years. In recent years I only saw Sondra a few times a year but each time was as special as always spending time with her. We stayed in touch in between mostly through email.
We shared a love for city life, especially in vintage homes like the one she & John have shared near the Mississippi River.
Sondra was the friend I most looked up to. She was so genuine, caring, smart, compassionate and always had good judgment & wonderful common sense. Throughout life if I was having trouble making a decision or just figuring something out, Sondra would come to mind as always thoughtful, knowledgable & truly caring. She was so devoted to her parents in our younger years & I remember her taking extended time away from work to move in with them to provide care they needed. Even 70 years later, when Sondra talked about her family & especially the loss her sister when they were children, tears still welled up in her eyes.
It was fun to hear about her travels with John to Panama, New Orleans & on to Florida. As all of us aged, through all the changes in our relationships, it was easy to see that Sondra & John's relationship was a true love story. They have each had opportunities to support each other in sickness & in health. And they each stepped up in such caring ways. Sondra felt truly loved by John.
Since the pandemic Sondra only had lunch out on restaurant patios out of an abundance of concern for John's health. I always trusted her judgment & decisions. So our lunch dates were during patio weather the past several years. During the past couple of months we were each watching the weather & texting back & forth about possible lunch dates. I looked so forward to seeing her & I'm sad we missed each other this spring. Now every day when I look at my weather app and see a sunny day, Sondra is the 1st thought I have. She will always be sunshine to me!
I pray for peace & rest for her beautiful soul. I know that John will keep her in his heart every single day.
