Obituary of Carl Edward Olson

Carl Edward Olson, 87, passed away Friday, Aug. 21, 2015 at his home. Carl was born May 18, 1928 in Cloquet, Minn., to Carl and Mabel (Belden) Olson. Carl graduated from Central High School in 1946 and attended UMD. He joined the Army and served in World War II. Carl received his training at Fort Polk, LA and served in the Army Occupation in Japan as a military police. He received an honorable discharge in 1948 and then joined the Army Reserves, retiring in 1973 having attained the rank of Platoon Sergeant. He was known as "Sergeant Snuffy." Carl was a chemist at U.S. Steel and retired in 1983. Carl was a hard worker and at a very young age had his first job delivering phone books. He delivered the Duluth News Tribune, a morning route, covering many steep hills in Hunters Park, in all kinds of weather. Carl also did farm work, having been trained by his Grandpa Olson, on the family farm in Lakewood. Farming and gardening became a hobby to Carl. Carl was preceded in death by his parents; and a granddaughter, Kimberly Wilke. He is survived by his son, Albert Olson; two daughters, Judy (Steven) Seppo and Susan Wilke, all of Duluth. He has nine grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers, Donald (Nancy) of Allegan, Mich., Allen (Donna) of Duluth and Jack (Una) of Newberry, Mich.; and former wife and friend, June Larson. MEMORIAL SERVICE: 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, in the chapel at Forest Hill Cemetery with a graveside service to follow.
