Obituary of Nancy McHaffie Fride

Nancy McHaffie Fride, 88, died Sept. 11, 2015, in St. Anthony Care Center in Minneapolis, where she entered hospice in August. Nancy was born in Duluth to Dr. Orval L. and Evelyn McHaffie. She was a 1944 graduate of Denfeld High School. She then attended the University of Minnesota and trained in medical technology at Swedish Hospital in Minneapolis, after which she returned to Duluth and was employed in the laboratory at St. Luke's hospital from 1951-53. Nancy was married to Edward T. Fride from 1952-1979. Nancy is survived by her six children, Father Ed Fride of Ann Arbor, Mich.; Nancy Biele (Geri Graham) of St. Paul, Mark Fride (Lori Andresen) of Duluth, Scott Fride (Theresa Livingood) of Tampa, Fla., Gail Dwyer (Micheal) of Fremont, Neb.; and Bill Fride (Matt Borkowski) of Chicago; she was the adored Grandma Ticky to her grandchildren Tony Biele, Jessica (Todd) Grabe, Zach Fride, Michelle Fride, Ginger Fride, Matt Fride and Dana Fride; Olive and Porter, her great-grandchildren, were her most recent delight. Sadly, she never met her latest great-grandchild, Wolfgang, born July 15. She is also survived by her brother, Richard McHaffie of Florida. After her divorce, she was a companion to Dave Morris for 10 years and incorporated his family into her life. He died in 1992. She is also survived by his family, Jim (Lorraine), Gary (Cheryl) and Pam Boman and their children and grandchildren whom she loved dearly. Natalie (Craig) Kromschroeder's and Mike Boman's caring visits to her recently were especially meaningful. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Delores Mickelson. Nancy was a community volunteer, serving as Charter President of the Mrs. Jaycees, Secretary, Board member and actor at the Duluth Playhouse, charter Board member of the Duluth Lawyers Wives, and Board member of the Junior League of Duluth. She also volunteered at St. Luke's hospital, the American Red Cross and Miller Dwan hospital. At Pilgrim Congregational Church, she was a Deaconess and taught Sunday School. For over 40 years she was a friend of Bill W. and, for a number of years, actively served the recovery community. She loved to bowl, golf and needlepoint. Our gratitude goes to all of the staff at St. Luke's Oncology and Hematology for their care over the past five years, St. Ann's Residence for its welcoming presence and St. Anthony Care Center in St. Anthony for nurturing during her last days. VISITATION: 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Cremation Society, 4100 Grand Ave. Memorial Service: 1 p.m. Thursday at Pilgrim Congregational Church, 2310 E.
