Obituary of Gerald L Goerts

Gerald L. "Jerry" Goerts Sr., 79, of Duluth, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2015, in Solvay House. Jerry was born in Proctor May 17, 1936, to Peter and Marie (Effinger) Goerts. After high school he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he served for four years. He was united in marriage to Joanne M. Baune in Spokane, Wash., Nov. 18th and 19th, 1955 ... it's a long story. Later the couple moved to Duluth where Jerry worked for the D.W.&P. Railroad. They settled in International Falls to raise their children and moved back to Duluth in 1989. Jerry loved to fish whenever he could and spend time with his family and friends. Although he maintained a quiet demeanor, Jerry harbored a wry sense of humor that will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by many beloved family members. Jerry is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Joanne; daughters Madonna (Larry) LeBlanc, Theresa Goerts, Suzanne (Mark) Haen and Kristen Goerts; sons Thomas (Rose) Goerts, Gerald (Katie) Goerts Jr. and Bruce (Mary Klein) Goerts; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister Kathy Milam; and many extended family members and friends. The family extends a special thank you to the staff at Solvay House for the extraordinary care they provided Jerry. A memorial service will be held closer to his birthday in the spring of 2016.
