Obituary of James B. Delano

James B. (Jim) Delano, 92, of Minneapolis, MN, passed away peacefully on Wednesday February 3, 2016. Born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, to Roy and Elsie Delano. He lived most of his life in both Saint Paul, and Minneapolis. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Gloria (Krengel), sons, Thomas (Kristen), Jerome (Karen), grandchildren, Catherine (Dan) Marino, Stephen (Megan) Delano, and Sarah Delano, and great-grandchildren, Colin and James Marino. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Ruth (K.O.) Butler, and Dorothy (Fred) Ferguson. He was a WW2 veteran, having served in the US Army Air Forces. He graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1949. Jim worked for Northern States Power, (now Xcel Energy), from 1949 until his retirement as Director of Public Affairs in 1988. Jim was active in both community, and fraternal organizations. He was a 32nd degree Mason, and a Zuhrah Shriner. He was President of the Minneapolis Aquatennial in 1971, President of the Minneapolis Kiwanis club in 1976, and a long term member of the Minneapolis Engineers Club. He was the University of Minnesota Alumni Homecoming King in 1999. Jim was actively involved in his church, Saint James on the Parkway, in Minneapolis. Jim loved to travel with his wife, and socialize with their many friends. He was also an avid wood worker having spent many years trying to carve the perfect bird. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service for Jim will be held in the chapel on the grounds of the Becketwood, located at 4300 West River Parkway in Minneapolis, at 11 AM on June 10, 2016. The family will receive friends at 10 AM. Interment will be at the Fort Snelling National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family asks that any memorial donations be sent to either Saint James on the Parkway in Minneapolis, 3225 E. Minnehaha Parkway, Minneapolis, 55417, or the Episcopal Church Home Foundation 490 E. Lynnhurst Avenue, Saint Paul, 55104.
