Obituary of Socorro Roberta Steele

Age 78, of Amery, WI and formerly of Woodville, WI, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2016 at her home in Amery, surrounded by her family. Socorro was born on August 21, 1937 in Forsyth, Montana to Juan and Eulalia Covarrubias. She and her 8 siblings grew up in the farmlands surrounding Rosebud, MT. Socorro attended school in Rosebud until 1953 at Sacred Heart School and graduated high school in 1955 from Miles City, MT. Shortly after graduation, she moved to St. Paul, MN where she went to work at Macalester College. She later worked at Donaldson’s in Baldwin, WI and Fortis/Hartford Life where she retired. On December 31, 1957, She married John (Jack) Steele. They had five children, Michael, Mark, Debbie, Ron and Luke. As a family, they enjoyed hunting and fishing together. Socorro enjoyed music of all kinds, dancing, flower gardening and having the family together for Sunday meals. In addition to her parents, Socorro was preceded in death by her brothers, Juan “John”, Elias “Leo”, Francisco “Frank” and Pablo “Paul” Covarrubias. Socorro is survived by her husband, John (Jack) Steele; children Mike (Louise) Steele of Amery, WI; Mark (Amy) Steele of Osakis, MN; Debbie Steele of St. Paul, MN; Ron (Wendie) Steele of Clear Lake, WI and Luke (Holly) Steele of Hudson, WI; as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her loving sisters Maria Dora “Mary” Ruffatto; Maximiana “Sister Consuelo” Covarrubias; Concepcion “Connie” (Bob) Ratzel and Amparo “Consie” Kelly; and many loving nieces and nephews. A Funeral Mass will take place on Friday May 6 at 2:00 pm at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1050 Keller Avenue N, Amery WI 54001. Memorials are preferred to the family.
