Obituary of Kent V. Bergstrom
Kent V. Bergstrom, 96, of Duluth, passed away April 25, 2016, in Chris Jensen Health and Rehab.
Kent was born Feb. 22, 1920, to the late Harry and Emma (Anderson) Bergstrom.
Kent grew up on a farm in Rail Prairie and attended a one room school house. In 1937, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and worked at the Rabideau CCC camp near Blackduck and the Sawbill camp near Tofte. He was a Veteran of World War II, serving in the Air Force at Davis-Monthan Field in Tucson, Ariz. After the war, Kent moved to Duluth and worked as a chef and meat cutter for the Hotel Spalding, the Hotel Duluth and the Jolly Fisher. While working at the Hotel Duluth he helped prepare a meal for John F. Kennedy during the Kennedys 1963 visit to Duluth. Kents meat cutting ability was legendary. During hunting season, he often cut up deer for the neighbors. Kent loved fishing, woodworking, baking and cooking. Kent was very handy and could fix most anything. His fixes were often clever and original.
Kent was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he served as an usher of many years, a former member of St. Matthew's American Lutheran Church, and a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
Kent married Frieda W. Bader of April 10, 1948.
He was preceded in death by his wife; and his brothers, Gayle, and Donald Bergstrom.
Kent is survived by his sons, Timothy (Cheryl), Lawrence, and Daniel Bergstrom; and a grandson, Dylan.
SERVICE: 10 a.m. Friday April 29, 2016, in First Memorial Chapel 4100 Grand Ave., Duluth. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of service in the funeral home. Burial will be at Sunrise Cemetery in Hermantown.
