Obituary of Robert Berg
Robert Berg was born in Chicago, IL, to Earl and Gladys Berg. Raised in Crookston, MN, Bob was the youngest of three children and the only son. When he was young he learned the meaning of hard work while working on a farm. He also pursued passions including playing basketball and defense on the hockey team, while also mastering the guitar. He became a skilled guitarist and would play for hours, and was happy to do so for his friends and family. As a teenager in the 1960s he co-founded one of several rock bands called The Green Men, for which he proudly sported green hair. He started his family as a young man and went on to raise three daughters with his first wife in Minneapolis, MN, and continued to work hard as a skilled craftsman hanging and finishing drywall as a proud union member. In the 1980s, he fell in love with a lakeside spot in Deerwood, MN, where he first planted a camper trailer. Bob had a big vision to make a home where his trailer sat, and with his skilled hands, he did exactly that. Working evenings and weekends, Bob and his second wife built the home that he would reside in until his death. There he enjoyed fishing, boating, and tidying up his garage workshop so that he could build something new or fix something that was broken. But over the years he also fell out of love with the Minnesota winters and became a Texas snowbird. Spending winters in the south allowed Bob to find another one of his life passions, golf, which he played nearly every day along with playing cards with friends and nights dancing. His nearly 20 years of retirement were fulfilling but not as much as the joy that his family brought to him. Bob loved and was loved by his wife, daughters, stepchildren, and their families. He was particularly adored by his grandchildren who called him Papa and were beneficiaries of his sweet and kind nature. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Flora Jane and Joyce, and his grandson Gabriel. He is survived by his wife, Bich Ngoc Nguyen Berg; his daughters Laurie Petersen (Rich), Shelly Deutsch (Joel), and Tracy Corkran (Dan); stepdaughter Ruby Nguyen; 8 grandchildren (Ashley, Nicole, Brittany, Sam, Casey, Cody, Jordan, and Cameron); and 9 great grandchildren. In these people, Bob lives on. Memorials in Bob’s honor should be made to Epworth United Methodist Church, 3207 37th Ave South, Minneapolis, MN 55406.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Epworth United Methodist Church. Lunch will be served following the service.
