Obituary of Nancy Z. Browne
Nancy Z. Browne passed away on July 17, 2024, at Regions Hospital, Saint Paul at the age of 91, from vascular dementia, following hip surgery.
Nancy was born in 1933 in Minneapolis. Her parents were Roy "Zim" and Elinor Zimmermann.
Nancy was a champion for her children, women's rights, and the environment. In 1970 she received a BA in Elementary Education with a minor in music from the University of WI - Eau Claire. She taught 4th grade for 2 years in Eau Claire, WI. After she left teaching she worked as an administrative assistant for many government, nonprofit, and educational organizations.
She was a longtime active member of several Unitarian Universalist churches. She was also active within the National Organization for Women (NOW), the League of Women Voters, the AAUW, AUW, and other organizations. She was active on many boards including at Applewood Senior Cooperative where she lived for over 15 years. She loved her cats, coffee, jazz, blues, classical music, playing the piano, writing, baking, singing, birds, reading, book club, volunteering, swimming, and speaking out for causes she believed in.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Ward, her sister Lory, and many of her women's advocacy friends. Survived by her daughters Julia and Laurel.
A Celebration of Nancy’s Life will be held Saturday, October 12, 10:30 AM at First Universalist Church of Minneapolis: 3400 Dupont Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55408
In lieu of flowers, Nancy would have wanted memorials to any women's rights organization.
