Obituary of Michael Broderick

Captain Mike Broderick (SPFD Retired), age 95 of Roseville, MN, formerly of Pine City, MN passed away on July 18, 2024 surrounded by his loving family.

Mike is preceded in death by his parents, father Daniel and mother Eva, brother John, wife JoAnn, sons David and Kevin. He is survived by his sister Joyce Knops (nee Broderick), children Daniel, James (Mary), Thomas (Debbie), Susan Brown (Jeffery) and Michael (Tammy), daughter in-laws Geralyn and Kathy, 11 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and countless friends.

He was born in Little Chicago, MN on a small farm and graduated from Mechanic Arts High School in St. Paul. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed as a Crash Rescue Fire Fighter in Gila Bend, AZ. While there, he was awarded the Soldiers Medal for heroism for his actions involving recovery of a pilot from a crashed aircraft. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sargent in July of 1952.

After returning to St. Paul, MN he began work at the St. Paul Fire Department assigned to Rescue Squad 1. In the early 70’s he was amongst the first group of paramedics trained in the city. He called Stations 8, 14 and 4 home for many years retiring in 1980 as a Captain, assigned to Medic 4. He then moved on to his second career as an EMT for Smith Martin Ambulance, Health One and finally Allina Health Care.

His love of food, particularly Cosetta’s Italian and a cold Guinness were his hallmarks as was his famous fortified coffee. A mentor to many and a friend to all, he was never shy about helping out family, friends or acquaintances and always had a great story to tell no matter the occasion. He will be sorely missed.

A celebration of life will be held at the Amira Choice of Roseville common room, 2680 Lexington Avenue North, Roseville, MN from 11:00 am – 3::00 pm on August 3rd, 2024.

Mike will be laid to rest at Fort Snelling National Cemetery at a date to be announced.
