Obituary of Marlene Miller

Marlene Miller passed away peacefully at Riley Crossing Senior Living on May 27, 2024, just eight days short of her 100th birthday. Her life, spanning nearly a century, was a testament to the resilience, love, and unwavering kindness that she embodied.

"Minnie" Nizalik was born on June 4, 1924, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, to William and Caroline Nizalik. She later chose to officially and legally be called Marlene.

On September 8, 1945, Marlene married Michael Miller at St. John Cantius Church in Winnipeg. Their union brought forth two sons, Terry and Wayne, whom Marlene cherished above all else. As a dedicated homemaker, she poured her heart into nurturing her family.

The family moved to the United States for over a decade when the boys were young. Outside of the home, she held occasional jobs as a seamstress and chocolatier! She later returned to Canada until recently. On May 7, Marlene moved to Chanhassen, Minnesota to be closer to family during her final chapter. 

Marlene valued community and connection. She was a cornerstone of social gatherings on Leila Avenue for countless years. She had a knack for making others feel special by remembering their birthdays, acknowledging illnesses, or other poignant personal occasions. Whether organizing events, playing bingo, curling, or crafting her famous perogies, Marlene's presence illuminated the lives of those around her. She also found immense joy in watching her great-grandchildren grow.

A stoic woman of strength and grace, Marlene seldom voiced complaints, except, perhaps, when her food wasn't hot enough or the servings were too large. Her gratitude knew no bounds, and she made it a point to express appreciation for every kindness bestowed upon her, even in her final days.

Marlene is survived by her two sons, Wayne Miller of Menomonie, WI, and Terry Miller (Jeanie) of Victoria, MN. She is also survived by her grandson, Andrew (Ciara) of Chanhassen, MN, and great-grandchildren, Vaeda and Walden, as well as her sister, Victoria Latocki, niece Eileen (Dwight) Gibson, nephew Doug Melnyk, and many other treasured nieces and nephews.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Riley Crossing and Brighton Hospice for their compassionate care of Marlene during her final days. Marlene will find eternal rest at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, next to her beloved husband, Michael.
