Obituary of Joyce Lurene Daugherty

Joyce Lurene Daugherty (Berg) , age 95, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday, April 28th at Elysian Senior Homes of Duluth.

She was born in Duluth, MN, on January 6th, 1929 to Kenneth and Adelane Lyons.

She married Douglas S. Berg on December 16th, 1949.  Together they had four children.

Ten years after Douglas passed away from a heart attack, she married Bill Daugherty in June 1980 until Bill's passing in 2014.

Joyce spent the majority of her 95 years in the Lakeside neighborhood on the east side of Duluth. She was a kind and loving soul who always welcomed you with a "hi honey" when you walked in the door and was ready with cookies and coffee or milk. If the cookies were gone (highly unlikely) she pulled the cookie dough out of the fridge and baked up a pan on the spot. She was an avid gardener and knew the names of most, if not all the flowers, trees and birds that surrounded her home or cabin on East Bass Lake in Cotton, MN. She was chronically grateful for all aspects of her life which was undoubtedly the foundation for her contagious happiness. The important words of wisdom she lived by are "Always make room for dessert." and "Take time each day to tend to the flowers.", and "Be active every day." Mom, we will miss you so much!

She is survived by five children, Diana Berndt (Steve), Kevin Berg (Katie). Laurie Sauer (Rick), Doug Berg (April) and Mary Carlson (Brad). She is further survived by 12 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents Kenneth and Adelane Lyons, her sister Marilyn Strudwick, her first husband Doug Berg and her second husband Bill Daugherty.

A celebration of life service is currently being planned for July 6th at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church on 45th Avenue East in Duluth. 

In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to Lakeside Presbyterian Church (lakesidepreschurch.org) or the Duluth Garden Club. She would love it if you also planted a tree (or two or three) in her name.

The entire family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Elysian staff, Gentiva Hospice, and her hairdresser Tanya Danner. You all made her last couple of years and her final days the best they could be.
