Obituary of John Charles Helwig

Dear Friends and Family, It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved John Charles Helwig, known to many as a cherished husband, Dad, Papa, Brother, Coach, Teammate, Friend, and Mentor. John touched the lives of countless people during his 77 years on this earth, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories. John's greatest pride and joy were his family, including his beautiful wife of 56 years, Lynne, and his adored grandchildren: Maris (22), Tanyon (20), Jacob (20), Rya (19), Talli (17), Mara (17), Tatum (14), Colbie (14), and Finn (12). He cherished each of them deeply, and they will forever hold his memory close to their hearts. John's sense of humor, quick wit, and unconditional love left an unforgettable mark on each of them, and they will forever treasure the special moments shared with Papa. To his children, Bo (Mary), Jed (Maggie), and Leah (Mike), John was a source of unwavering support, love, and guidance. He instilled in them values of kindness, simplicity, humor, and the importance of family. John's legacy lives on through his children, as they carry forward the lessons he taught them and the love he bestowed upon them. John's enduring love story with Lynne was nothing short of extraordinary. They met at 16 years old and shared a lifetime of adventures, laughter, and love. Their bond was unbreakable, and they rarely spent a day apart. Together, they enjoyed countless simple pleasures, from road trips and garage sales to days spent on Devils Lake in Webster, WI. Lynne was John's rock and caretaker during his final months, and his greatest wish was for her happiness and well-being. John's impact extended far beyond his family, touching the lives of lifelong friends, colleagues, students, players, and strangers alike. From his days as a dedicated coach to his career in the beer business and teaching, John left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered. While we mourn John's passing, we also celebrate the beautiful life he lived and the memories we shared with him. In the spirit of his love for a good party, we plan to hold a celebration of his life this summer, where we can come together to reminisce and honor his memory. This will be an outdoor casual party. It will take place on Saturday June 22nd, 2024 at the address below starting at 4:00 p.m. In the meantime, please keep John and our family in your thoughts and prayers. If you are unable to attend the celebration but would like to extend your condolences, we kindly ask that you reach out to Lynne at the address provided below. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred for plans that our family has to donate to charities close to our Dad’s heart. “Adios” Dad and Papa, Love you forever, Bo & Mary, Jed & Maggie, Leah & Mike (Address for Condolences and the Party on June 22nd at 4:00 pm) Lynne Helwig 11812 32nd Street North Lake Elmo, MN 55042 Psalm 23, a cherished passage often referred to as "Dad's favorite," holds profound significance in times of both joy and sorrow. Its timeless words offer comfort and reassurance to those who find solace in its verses: "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever."
