Obituary of Brian Jon Foster

Brian Jon Foster, 71, passed away on March 9, 2024 in Minneapolis at Hennepin County Medical Center from complications of Covid. Brian was born in Waterloo, Iowa on February 20, 1953. He was the youngest child of Marjorie and Jack Foster and little brother to Jackie, Craig, and Becky.

Brian attended Minneapolis College of Art and Design in the early 70’s. He continued to live and create there his entire life. A self-described “Tile Guy”, Brian was a renowned artist who worked in many materials, but primarily vinyl tile. He created 3-dimensional vinyl sculpture, extraordinary floor designs and signature pieces of art. He was a visiting instructor at Minneapolis College of Art and Design, a recipient of numerous awards and grants, participated in many solo and group exhibitions. His work has been exhibited regionally and nationally and represented in many private and public installations including the Walker Art Center and Frederick Weisman Foundation in Los Angeles.

Brian endured serious health issues starting with a brain tumor in 2001. Following acute rehabilitation, his time was spent developing other interests while on his road to recovery. Sailing on Lake Harriet with the Courage Center’s adapted sailing program was a summer highlight. He also volunteered at Hennepin County Medical Center’s Inspired Arts Program for 17 years where his artistic skills were utilized.

A devastating fall from the loft in his studio in 2019 left Brian paralyzed and wheelchair bound. He never gave up! Again, he enrolled in rehabilitation programs and worked on weekly art projects with his friend, Michele Coppin. His group home was adorned with his colorful art in every room. Undeterred, he submitted a 3-dimensional piece for gallery exhibition in 2022.

Brian made extraordinary art and then made art out of the ordinary. If Brian had a window in his head allowing others to see in, they would see one thing: Art, Artful shapes, textures, spaces and brilliant colors. He was brave, kind, well-loved and saw the world through his creative genius.

Brian is survived by his sister Jackie Carroll and husband Ron, Sister-in-law Joyce Foster, sister Becky Crane and husband John, and by his nephew, five nieces and their families.

A celebration of Brian’s life will be held in Minneapolis in April. Date and location to be determined.
