Obituary of Dorothy Peterson
Dorothy Peterson, 94 of Hovland, Minnesota passed away January 30, 2024 at Waterview Shores in Two Harbors.
Born on October 18, 1929 to John and Dolly Koss of Hovland, Dorothy lived on the North Shore of Minnesota her entire life. Dorothy grew up in a rustic cabin with no running water, and did her school homework by kerosene lamp in a room heated by a wood stove. The cabin was modernized at sometime with electricity, and a telephone was added in 1951.
Dorothy married the love of her life, Lawrence (Larry) Peterson on September 8, 1951. Larry and Dorothy had two children, Margaret Peterson and Lin (Susan) Peterson of Lake Havasu City, AZ.
.
A proud grandmother to Lance (Kayla) of Jurupa Valley, California and Preston (
Scarlett) of Mt Juliet, Tennessee, and a great grandmother to 5 boys. She was so excited when Landon, Cayden, Ledger, Maverick and Hardin came along, and would start almost every conversation by asking "how are the boys?"
When someone asked Dorothy how she was doing, she almost always responded in the same way with every inquiry. She would say "well, I'm alive." And indeed she was. She celebrated her 75th year after her high school graduation with one remaining classmate by riding in a convertible during the Fisherman's Picnic parade in the summer of 2022 and throwing candy to parade watchers.
At age 93, Dorothy finally gave up her motorcycle endorsement on her driver license and was thrilled to go out sailing on a sailboat for the first time..
Fiercely independent, Dorothy was able to live alone, taking care of her life, cleaning her home, cooking meals for herself and baking her famous chocolate cakes for visitors who stopped for a visit or coffee until 3 months before her passing.
A lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hovland, Dorothy served in many roles contributing to the church community. In the past, she played the piano many years for Sunday services, and joyfully shared in duties of maintaining the church with other members, even when it meant washing and waxing the church floors on her hands and knees.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, John and Dolly Koss, her brother Kenneth Koss, and her beloved husband Larry.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be given to Trinity Lutheran Church of Hovland to upgrade the present sound system.
A celebration of life will be held on June 8, 2024 at Trinity Lutheran Church at 1100. A luncheon will be served after the service. Please wear bright colors.
The family expresses their deepest appreciation and love to all who visited, called, prayed, sent cards, letters and supported Dorothy and the entire family during her time at home, in the hospital and at Waterview Shores.
Many thanks also to the staff at Waterview shores and hospice for the extra level of comfort care Dorothy received during her last days on this earth
