Obituary of Gary William Nelson

Gary William Nelson, 72, beloved husband, father, musician, and carpenter extraordinaire, joined his Creator in everlasting life on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, in Rochester, Minnesota. A celebration of Gary's life will be held at a later date.

Gary was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1951 to William Lester Nelson and Barbara Jean (Beresford) Nelson. He lived a large part of his life in Bloomington.

Gary will be deeply missed by his family left here on earth. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Kathy Lynn Nelson of Bloomington; his sons Mark Nelson and wife Amy of Minneapolis, and Neil Nelson of Incline Village, NV; his daughter, Emily Fossey and husband Rick of Lakeville; his stepson, Erik Johnson and wife Anja of Denver, CO; his grandsons Nicholas and Spencer Fossey, and granddaughter Ashleigh Fossey; his brother David Nelson of Monticello, MN; his in-laws Bob and Carrie Knudson of Sterling, CO; his nieces Taylor, Jenna, and Rachelle; his cousin Greg Nelson of Minneapolis; his nephew, Matt Nelson and his niece Lisa Nelson, of Minneapolis. 

Gary is preceded in death by his parents, William Lester Nelson and Barbara Jean Nelson, and his brothers Richard and Jeffrey Nelson.

We would like to thank the wonderful staff at Mayo Methodist for their tender care while treating Gary.

John 14:1-6 - Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father's house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going. Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way? Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
