Obituary of Charles Edward Matthews Jr.
Charles E Matthews Jr, age 94, of Saint Paul, passed away peacefully on January 29, 2024.
Preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Myrtle Matthews and siblings, Patricia M Kosciolek (Matthews), Mary Jo Supalo (Matthews) and John F Matthews.
Survived by his loving wife, Barbara, of 51 years, sister Kathleen F Moran (Platzer) and many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.
Born in Minneapolis, MN on May 7, 1929, to Charles E Matthews Sr and Myrtle M (McCormick) Matthews. Charles grew up in South Minneapolis near the Charles E Matthews Park and Community Center dedicated to his father. After graduation in 1948 from South High, where he was a decorated Football Player, he also played Football for the Army and the College of Saint Thomas. Upon graduation from Saint Thomas Charles secured employment at Washington Mutual Life Insurance and then IBM retiring in 1985 after 25 years of service. In the Fall of 1972, at the age of 43, Charles met Barbara Rance, also 43, originally from London, UK, where it was love at first sight and they wed 6 months later at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. They made a home together on Eleanor Avenue in Saint Paul where they remained until the most recent 3 years.
Charles aka Charlie, Red, Brother, Uncle Charlie was known for his reserved manner accompanied by quick wit delivered with comedic timing. Always a snappy dresser, known for wearing Irish tweed wool caps. Charles was a dedicated husband, companion and protector of his beloved wife Barbara. In addition to his dedication to his wife and employer IBM, Charles with deeply involved With the AA program which he felt saved his life and he continued to support others in the program for decades. Charles enjoyed traveling by road (many Cadillacs worn out) and many overseas trips to the UK and Ireland. Charles loved the Vikings, historical literature, board games and lively conversation, and mostly the companionship and love of Barbara.
Memorial Service to be held on February 22, 2024, at the Cremation Society of Minnesota, 7110 France Ave S, Edina, MN. Visitation one hour prior to service with a reception to follow. Private interment at Fort Snelling.
Memorials preferred to Grace Hospice, 1015 4th Ave N, Suite 206, Minneapolis, MN 55405.
