Obituary of Allan C Reed
Allan C. Reed, 69, of Duluth Township, passed away November 8, 2023 of gastric cancer at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Marshall, MN to Orrin and Helen (Mary) Reed. He was raised on the family farm in Cottonwood, MN. He graduated from Cottonwood High School in 1972. He briefly attended Southwest State University and then served in the US Navy during the Vietnam era and was proud to be a Corpsman, taking care of wounded servicemen in a hospital setting in Chicago and San Diego. After serving his country, he graduated from Bemidji State College in 1976 with a BS in Community Services and worked in the human services field most of his adult life. He owned and operated several boarding homes for the homeless and disabled in Duluth, including Reed’s Pine, Lakeview Mansion, and Miketin Boarding Home. He cared deeply about people who couldn’t care for themselves. He had a passion for canoeing and fishing in the BWCA and built a rustic log cabin with his wife Mary on Garden Lake near Ely, MN. He also enjoyed sailing on Lake Superior and had several trips to the Apostle Islands and did sailboat racing with Barker’s Island Yacht Club and Duluth Yacht Club, winning several awards. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Mary, daughters Sarah (Ryan) Morrison of Sioux Falls, SD, and Sophia (Nicholas) Reed of Duluth, grandchildren Mason and Ella Permeh of Sioux Falls, SD, and Harper Morrison, Evie Smith, Evan Reed, Selena and Catalina Caron of Duluth; sisters, Diann (LeRoy) Neisius of Marshall, MN, and Doris (Tim) Berube of Lake Placid, FL; brothers Wayne (Linda) Reed of Corpus Christi, TX and Norman (Jody) Reed of Cedar Rapids, IA. He is predeceased by his parents Orrin and Helen (Mary) Reed of Cottonwood, MN along with his grandparents and great grandparents.
A celebration of life will be held on from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., December 3, 2023, at the Clearwater Event Center, 5135 North Shore Dr., Duluth, MN
Arrangements are under the care of the Cremation Society of Minnesota.
