Obituary of Alton Curtis Shimp
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Alton (Al) Curtis Shimp on October 12, 2023 in Burnsville, MN. Al was born in Montevideo, MN on April 12, 1937 to Sherman and Ada Shimp. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years Carole (Kopecky) Shimp, his parents Sherman and Ada Shimp, and his brother Gene Shimp.
Al served in the National Guard right out of High School followed by 3 years in the Army where he worked in the signal corp. He married Carole on 9/22/1962 and was a dedicated husband who cared for her during her extended illness until she passed away in 2014. Al attended Northwestern Technical College and the University of Minnesota earning his engineering degree. He then worked as an electrical engineer at CTS Fabri-tek for 35 years, working his way up to Director of Engineering. He then bought and ran the One Stop Mail Shoppe for about 9 years, earning the Richfield Small Business of the Year award before finally retiring in 2002.
Al was a dedicated member of River Hills United Methodist Church where he served in many volunteer roles. He loved to work with his hands, especially gardening and keeping his yard beautifully landscaped. He enjoyed many social activities through his church and spending time with family. Al was a man who could do anything he put his mind to and he had a love for learning, even as he got older. He was a loyal husband, father, grandfather, and friend who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Al is survived by son Curt and wife Kelly; daughter Susan Charter and husband Jason; grandchildren Christian and Isabella; brother Joel Shimp; nieces; nephews; other relatives; friends and neighbors. A celebration of life service will be held at River Hills United Methodist Church on October 27th at 11:00 AM with visitation one hour prior to the service. Luncheon to follow.
