In Memoriam: Tim Anderson
I had the privilege of working alongside Tim during the early days of Goodfellow's restaurant. Those were times filled with excitement, where we would often spot celebrities dining among us, and my favorite part was rushing back to the kitchen to share these sightings with Tim. I'll never forget the day we saw Kurt Vonnegut, perched at a four-top table, clad in a tweed jacket adorned with elbow patches, casually puffing on PallMall straights while savoring a martini. Both Tim and I were ecstatic; we were avid fans of Vonnegut's work.
Tim was a self-proclaimed "redneck" with a profound love for hunting and fishing. He possessed a certain decisiveness in his words and actions that could come across as critical, even sharp to the staff. It did throw some people off, but beneath that exterior was a culinary genius. Tim's reputation as the best chef was well-deserved. His unwavering passion for the culinary arts translated into unforgettable dining experiences. I can honestly say that even to this day, I've never encountered better food, superior service, or a more captivating ambiance than what Tim created.
Running his kitchen was like watching a maestro at work. He led a tight-knit crew, and the results were nothing short of remarkable experiences for our guests. For those of us who took the time to know Tim on a deeper level, we discovered a man who learned to cook from his mother, never stepping foot into a culinary school. Yet, he stood shoulder to shoulder with those who had, and they often worked under his guidance.
Beyond his culinary talents, Tim was an intellectual of the highest order. He was incredibly well-read and possessed a keen intellect that was both inspiring and humbling. His creativity knew no bounds, and his passion for his art was infectious. Personally, I cherished every moment working with and for Tim. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family. Tim Anderson will be remembered as a legend in the culinary world, a passionate soul, and an intellect who left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to know him.
