Obituary of Marvin Friedrich

We are deeply saddened to announce that Marvin Friedrich passed away Saturday, September 16th at the age of 85. Marvin was born in 1938 to Walter & Viola Friedrich in Stillwater, MN.

He was raised in Lake Elmo, graduated from Stillwater High School in the class of 1956, and attended Macalaster College. Marvin married his high-school sweetheart and soul mate Mary Lou (Gedatus) in 1958 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Bayport, MN. Marvin began his career in banking as a teller for the First State Bank of Bayport and went on to become manager of the bank insurance agency. In his 50-year banking career, he served as Vice President and then Executive Vice President until his retirement in 1998. Marvin continued to serve on the bank board for many years following his retirement.

Marvin was always busy, and a member of many organizations, associations, and clubs; President of Lion’s Club, a member of Toastmasters, his church council, Stillwater Country Club, and the Bayport American Legion. He also served in the National Guard for six years.

In addition to his career and community involvement, Marvin had a deep love for birds, gardening, golf, boating, hunting, fishing, cribbage, card games, Minnesota sports, and his musical entourage, “The Pickin’ & Grinnin’ Boys”.

Marvin was best known for his quick-witted humor and his generous spirit. He had a boisterous personality and the charisma to make friends wherever he went. He was a truly great and beloved person; the impact of his character and vivacity will be forever cherished by his family who loved him dearly. He was an extraordinary man and his passing leaves a void in the hearts of many. His enormous personality will live on imbued within everyone he knew.

Preceded in death by parents Walter & Viola (Dornfeld) Friedrich; son Michael Friedrich; sister Lois and husband, Boyd Ehret; twin brother Melvin Friedrich; and great-great nephew Jackson Pahr. Marvin is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Mary Lou; son Mark and wife Sheila, beloved grandchildren Alaina (Noah) and Bennett; sister-in-law Edythe Friedrich; and many nieces, nephews, and so many cherished friends.

Funeral service will be Sunday, October 8 at 4:00 PM at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 490 4th St N, Bayport MN, with visitation two hours prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
