Obituary of Richard Arthur Person
In Memory of Richard Person "Rick" (September 18, 1946 - August 29, 2023)
Rick Person, a beloved husband, father and grandfather, and a valued member of the community, passed away on August 29, 2023, at the age of 76. He spent the majority of his life in St Louis Park, MN, leaving behind a legacy marked by passion, dedication, and meaningful connections.
He graduated from the University of Minnesota, where he met his wife, Barb. Their journey together led to a loving marriage and the joy of raising their son, Ben, who in turn brought more happiness by marrying Stacey, and becoming a proud grandfather to Beckett, Caspar, and Flynn.
He served his country in the Army during the Vietnam War era. He underwent language training at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, learning Arabic, and was stationed in Asmara, Ethiopia, embracing both duty and cultural understanding.
Utilizing the opportunities presented by the GI Bill, Rick earned advanced degrees in urban planning and public health, which eventually led to meaningful contributions within the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and the City of St Paul. He played an integral role in managing vital solid waste and recycling programs.
He championed environmental causes through active involvement with Habitat for Humanity and unwavering support for progressive initiatives. His dedication to work with Presbyterians for Earth Care benefited Westminster Church and churches throughout the nation. An advocate for democracy, Rick ensured the integrity of elections by volunteering as an election judge. In retirement, he provide valuable insights by assessing building environmental and energy efficiency.
An accomplished artist and watercolor painter, he found solace and creativity in his art. His paintings captured the beauty of nature, his worldly travel experiences, while reflecting his love for the world around him.
A dedicated member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Rick was a deacon who tirelessly advocated for social and environmental justice.
A memorial service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church in downtown Minneapolis on Saturday, September 16th at 11:00 a.m. with a social hour at 10:00 a.m. and a light lunch following the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory can be made to Habitat for Humanity or Westminster Presbyterian Church.
