I have fond memories of Don... as a resident here at Country Meadows. He was soooo encouraging to me as I began my chaplaincy here. He took the time to talk with me... ask about my family... and pray for me. It was a delight to visit him in his assisted living facility after he left Elim. I'm sure Don left you (his family) with a great example of being grateful for all things. I know, one day, we will reconnect in heaven. May the Lord bless you... and God has blessed me through Don. Pastor Dale Clifton, Milaca Chaplain.

Having had the opportunity to know Donald is truly a blessing. So while it is with great sadness to write these words, we are, at the same time, eternally grateful for having known him and for everything that he has done for so many of us on the Swedish side of his family tree.
In 1967, he brought his father, Oscar, and his uncle Bill to Sweden, so that they could visit the farm in the small village called Ryd, in the region of Småland, where they were born and lived before emigrating to the U.S. That trip was the start of a chain reaction of travels across the Atlantic by many people on both sides.
Donald’s kindness, sense of humor and big, contagious smile are just a few of the positive things we will always remember him for. His generosity and passion for making a positive impact in the lives of others led to, literally, countless fond memories for us (and for Åke and Gustav, who sadly are no longer with us). On our various visits to the U.S., he ensured that we got to experience as many new things as possible, which broadened our horizons and enriched our lives in a way that simply is not possible to put into words.
Attached are photos from two of the many trips: from the MSP airport in 1984 (when Kristina returned after a year of studying at Minnetonka High School) and from Fountain Hills (during a visit years later, together with his sister Ruth).
To honor Donald’s memory, we have sent contributions to the American-Swedish Institute in Minneapolis, as well as to a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the history and culture of Ryd (including maintenance of the “mission house” (see recent photo attached) that is located in the center of the village, just a stone’s throw from the farm where his father, aunts, uncles and their ancestors were born). This to reflect the journey of that side of his family and, in his spirit, support both sides of that journey.
He is dearly missed by all of us, his Swedish “cousins”, as he used to call us all,
Elisabeth, Eva, Kristina, and Anne-Marie with family

Donald Carlson and his family received me as an exchange student from Sweden for one year from the autumn 1971, the family then living in Minnetonka. Donald Carlson for me represents something of the best of American traditions and society. You work hard, with lots of ambition and energy for your own goals, but you also as Donald Carlson did, when you have the opportunity, you open your doors and family for others and you engage and make contributions to make society somewhat better.
Donald was great in understanding and communicating with others. When Donald visited in Sweden, he and my Father in Sweden went to together out in the forest to watch for moose, my Father with very little knowledge of English and Donald with only a few sentences in Swedish. They came back after some hours, they had seen several animals and both said they had a great time “speaking to each other”. And Donald and Norma received my parents and sister and took us all on a great tour in the US, another example of his generosity.
Donald being a ham-radio-enthusiast had contacts all over the world, and with his ham-radio I could sit in long conversations with my Swedish family through a ham-enthusiast in our hometown. Back then long before cheap Internet- and Skype-conversations that was fantastic, thanks to Donald’s ham-radio interest. But it might also say something deeper about his interest for the world and for contact with people around the world.
Being able to come back, especially for his 90th birthday, it was great to meet him again and experience his warmth and energy. Donald was opened-minded in many ways and together with Norma he encouraged me to take up classes in journalism and writing, in theatre and drama at Minnetonka High School. I am deeply thankful for all the opportunities Donald together with his family gave me, and the memory of Donald Carlson for me is a warm and generous person.
May he rest in peace. Vila i frid!

My name is Betty Kendall from GMCI and Henkel days with Don as our leader. Don was a kind gentleman with respect for every person. During the last 5 years or so, he brought a smile to me as my auto call number was one he pressed in error; it was always the start of a conversation about our days and friends at Henkel. Here are a few photos I found from the Henkel days in hopes that they bring bacck good memories for family and friends. We know that Don is now reunited with Norma with our Lord!
