Obituary of Alvin Maier
Al Maier, of Elk River, died June 12, 2023 after living with Parkinson’s for the past 7 years. He lived out his recent years at Elk River Senior Living. Thank you to the staff that listened to his jokes and stories, and to the staff who provided him the best care in days preceding his death.
Al married Phyllis Fretty in August 1960 until she preceded him in death June 23, 2017. Al served in the Navy with a tour in the Philippines from 1956 – 1959 and the reserves until 1962. Al was a teacher and librarian for Roseville Area Schools, until retiring in June 1996. In retirement, Al enjoyed wood working, gardening, volunteering, home projects, singing and spending time with neighbors and friends. He and Phyllis retired from Dayton to Aitkin for 15 years, wintering in Mesa, AZ for several years, then moving to Elk River in 2012 to be closer to family.
Al is preceded in death by his parents, Gottlieb and Bertha Maier and Phyllis. He is survived by sister Luella Miller of Bismarck and children: Wendy and Joel Larkin (Jordan and wife, Ashley, and their son Henry), Jennifer and Dan Johnson and Brandon and Alison Maier (and daughters Peyton and Addison).
A Celebration of Life is planned for the residents and staff at Elk River Senior Living with a private family burial at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. In lieu of cards and flowers, memorials to the Parkinson’s Foundation or MS Society would be appreciated by the family.
