Obituary of Harriet Elverda Brown
Harriet E. Brown, a beloved mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2023.
Harriet was born on June 4,1924 to John and Nettie (Nedrebo) Johnson in Drake, North Dakota. She was born at home, premature and not expected to survive. Her parents and neighbors worked tirelessly to care for the tiny baby. Newborn baby clothes were too big, so they dressed her in doll clothes. They kept her in a shoe box near the stove to keep her warm. Not only did Harriet survive, she thrived.
Harriet graduated from Drake High School and was valedictorian of her class. After high school, a courageous young woman boarded a train by herself to attend college at St. Olaf in Northfield, MN. She graduated with a Medical Technology degree. Harriet also earned a master's degree from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. After living and working in Detroit, Harriet moved to Fargo, ND and was employed at The Fargo Clinic. She married Glenn Brown on August 19,1951. They lived in various locations before moving to Halstad, MN in 1960 where Glenn established his medical practice. Harriet worked at the clinic on Saturdays. They raised their family in Halstad and were very involved in the community. In 2002 they moved to Moorhead, MN. Harriet and Glenn also enjoyed many winters in Harlingen,TX.
Harriet enjoyed cooking and baking, reading, crossword puzzles, needlework and crewel embroidery, playing the piano and spending time with family and friends. While living in Halstad, Harriet was involved in many church organizations at Halstad Lutheran. She was a proud member of the Halstad Women's Club. Harriet was also a Cub Scouts and Camp Fire Girls leader.
Harriet lived a long life full of blessings. She had her challenges but her determination, strength and faith helped her overcome many obstacles. Thank you for being such a strong role model for us. It's now time to rest. We love you!
Harriet is survived by her three children; Nancy (Lee) Warne, Paul (Linnea) Brown, Margaret "Peggy" (Stanley) Schimke; Grandsons; Eric Warne (fiance Alishia Zoch), Calvin Brown, Alec Schimke, Ian Schimke (fiance Catherine Rouillard), step grandsons Andy (Bettina) Warne, Chris (Ariel) Warne and step great-grandsons Benno, Henry and Harrison; Sisters-in-law; Arlene Johnson, Irene Johnson and Nellie Johnson and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Glenn, her parents, her brothers Erwin and Lyle and her grandson Mike Brown.
