I am sending you the photo of the little evergreen seedling in my garden that I am transplanting in a special spot that it can reach for the heave and the photo of the large tree is the beautiful specimen it will grow into over a very long time.

To Mary and your beautiful family,
I am so sorry that I did not see the email of Doug’s death and memorial service until this Sunday morning. Mary your beautiful, heart rending obituary & ‘loving letter/memoir’ of this lovely man and your family’s journey was so touching—made me cry. I recall how use to share with me in our talks from time to time while at work what a wonderful, gifted man he was and how lucky you were. I always laughed when you shared how you were a night owl and would be doing your house work in the wee hours of the morning— vacuuming at 4:00 a.m. in the morning— wondering— how in the world does your family sleep. I am so, so sorry for your loss and for your children’s loss of this precious man. I will hold you and your family tenderly in my heart and also in my garden. Just the other day I was doing cleaning and poking around and found this tiny evergreen seedling about 4-5 inches tucked under a shrub. I told myself that I need to come back and transplant this in a choice spot where it can spread its ‘wings’ to the heavens. I will do so in memory of Doug. I think it is a seedling from my Pinus Cembra which is a special evergreen— slow growing with soft needles. A true specimen!! Fitting don’t you think?
Sending live and blessings to you and your family,
Sonny Schneiderhan

I recall a hike many years ago, when we were very young. Doug asked me to meet him at the U of M library. He had plotted a hike over the Absaroka Mountains in Montana. There was a short trail at the beginning of his route and a bit longer one at the end, but mostly Doug wanted to find his own way over the mountain range. If there was a hard way and an easy way of doing something, the young Doug always seemed to prefer the hard way.
Forty-five years has dulled my memory, but I recall getting lost the first day and backtracking for several hours, and a boulder field where we ran leaping from one bolder to the next, too much momentum to stop, just hoping there was another bolder within range to land on. On a later day we arrived at an almost shear wall of rock a with no way around. We managed to find some hand and foot holds, and there were a few ledges, but mostly we scaled it by on hanging onto small trees and bushes growing out of fissures in the rock. Once we committed to the climb there was no turning around, since we could not to see where to place our feet to back down. We managed to make it to the top of the cliff without falling to our deaths, but even then it was too steep to stand and we needed to creep and crawl for quite a ways further. Later on we crossed an ice field. Below the steep ledge where we carefully made our way, stamping our boots down hard into the crusty surface, was an icy blue pool awaiting anyone who slipped. We of course had no ice pick or crampons for our boots, though I remember Doug was packing a needle nose pliers and a few other tools : )
A couple of years ago, asked Doug if he remembered the hike. He smiled at me, and said, "We could have died out there". I guess that's what made it memorable and worth doing. I sure miss that crazy guy!

Thanks Dick! Only you would dare to go on those wild hikes with Doug (I know there were many more!) Thanks for sharing this- I remember worrying about that trip and being very happy you both made it home. You were obviously the perfect friend for Doug. Love you!
