Obituary of Pearl Jeannette Lieb
Pearl Lieb, age 85, of Maple Lake died Thursday, February 16, 2023, at Buffalo Hospital from cardiopulmonary complications. She was born March 8, 1937, in Minneapolis, MN, to Joseph and Augustina 'Gustie'.
Pearl graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1955. She went on to earn her 2-year teaching certificate and BA in Education with a minor in Music from Concordia College, St. Paul, MN. She taught at St. Peter's Lutheran School prior to marrying Bill Lieb June 21, 1959, and starting her career as Homemaker and mother. She and Bill were parents to biological, adopted and foster children, approximately 15 in total.
Pearl and Bill purchased a home in the Field neighborhood in 1965 and became immersed in the politics of the day, Civil Rights and then the Field/Hale Pairing. In 1987 they moved to their cabin property in rural Maple Lake.
Pearl is best known for the ENTHUSIASM, PASSION AND JOY she brought to EVERYTHING she created and experienced! She lit up every room with her laugh and stories told at a hundred miles an hour! In grade school, she organized numerous neighborhood talent shows and played her 1st Sunday Church Service when she was just 13 years old as the substitute organist. From 1964 - 2014 (50 years), Pearl was the Organist and/or Choir Director at St. James Lutheran and Oakland Ave. UMC (both in Minneapolis), Silver Creek Reformed and Bethlehem UCC (both in Maple Lake).
She sang in the Field Mother Singers and Gospel Workshop of America Choirs. She started and directed the Witness Gospel Choir at Oakland Ave. UMC with the love and support from Carl Walker and another member of the Workshop. Pearl started and directed the Easter Orchestras at Oakland Ave UMC and Bethlehem UCC. In the 1970s, Pearl created silk floral arrangements and window displays for Dayton's Downtown Minneapolis and then went on to create displays for Herberger's. She also participated in Community Theater with the Parkway Players.
As a child of the Great Depression, doing what you can for yourself and your community was a part of her DNA. She tended beautiful flower and vegetable gardens, preserved and gave away the bounty, loved to cook and sew her own clothes.
After moving to Maple Lake, she continued singing, playing the piano and organ, participating in Community Theater with the Village Players/Maple Lake Community Theater and designing floral arrangements. And, she added to her accomplishments as a Creator/Director - Pearl was the President of Pioneer Park open-air History Museum in Annandale for 10 years, she served on the Central MN Mental Health Board of Directors, and she added a little more pizazz to any celebration by creating a Historical Show - A Doll Show for Pioneer Park's 50 Celebration and A Wedding Style Show for a Bethlehem UCC event.
PEARL LOVED DEEPLY! Especially children, animals and doing right by ALL! She reminisced often, longed for a simpler time, loved the simpler ways of life, creating enjoyment with what's around you - playing in the dirt, rocks, lake, with the pets, hobby farm animals and watching the animals in their natural environment. As she slowed down and her animals crossed the Rainbow Bridge, she spent more time in her craft room (3 season porch) making cards while watching the beauty of the world around her. It was very important for her to let you know she was thinking about you with a birthday, Christmas, Easter, Sympathy or Thank you card, handmade by her with LOVE. The state of the world became an ever increasing sadness for her, as it was difficult for her to accept that we each can only do our part to make the world a better place. She wanted to do more! She is an empath, and feels everyone's pain. Maybe in Heaven she'll be able to be more effective.
Pearlie, Thank You for all the Beauty, Joy, Love, and Passion you brought to all of our lives!
Pearl is survived by her children Gretchen, Dan (Mary), Bill (Kim), grandchildren Cassie (Aaron), Mark, Nate and great grandchildren Aubrey and Levi. She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Augustina 'Gustie', siblings Carol and Jerry and husband Bill.
