Obituary of Richard Frederick Bohlmann

Resting in his favorite recliner, Richard “Dick” Frederick Bohlmann passed away in his home on Saturday, August 27, 2022, next to his beloved wife.

Dick was born in Duluth to Hulda (Beers) and William Albert Bohlmann on April 20, 1934. He attended Duluth schools and graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1952.

On April 16, 1960, Dick married Benita “Bunny” Johnson of Duluth.  Their son, Adam Richard Bohlmann of Duluth, was born in 1963.

Dick worked for the DM&IR after high school before he joined the United States Army, then the Army Guard.  He transferred to the Minnesota Air National Guard in Duluth, where he served in the armament section.  Dick was the captain of the pistol team and ran the shooting range, excelling in his marksmanship.  He set shooting records at Camp Perry and was a dominant marksman in the country, including being named in the Governor’s 10 Best Shots in Minnesota and the President’s 100 Best Shots in the Country for pistol.  Some of his records were only recently broken. Dick retired as a Tech. Sergeant.

He joined the Duluth Fire Department in 1961 and helped save lives and protect property for 25 years.  He retired as a captain.

Loving the lake life, Dick started his own charter fishing company in the early 1980’s. He had the distinction of earning the very first (#1) Minnesota Guide Charter License for Lake Superior.  He captained the Lida Rose, the Yellow Rose, and then the Rambling Rose for 28 years.  He finished his charter fishing days as a first mate for his son, Adam.

Always the outdoorsman, Dick viewed deer hunting as a highlight of the year.  He and his wife led friends on numerous vacation trips to the Apostle Islands. They loved their life on Park Point, time on the golf course, and traveling anywhere warm during the winter months.

Dick and Bunny were members of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church then Spirit of God Lutheran Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother William “Bill” and wife Dorothy Bohlmann.

Dick will be greatly missed by his wife and son Adam (girlfriend Sheri); his nephews Brad (Heidi) Bohlmann of Duluth; Craig (Jennifer) Bohlmann of Appleton, WI; Scott (Nicole) Johnson of Cloquet; and Michael (Joyce) Johnson of Duluth; niece Lynn (John) O’Donnell of Buffalo, MN; and grandnieces, grandnephews, and many friends.
