Obituary of Evelyn Mae Johnson

Evelyn Mae Johnson (Gimpel) of Duluth, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2022 at Heritage Haven, Duluth.

She was born on April 5, 1926 to Henry and Olga Gimpel. She was a lifelong resident of Duluth, attending schools in Duluth and graduating from Hermantown High School. She married Wallace Haney on February 21, 1944. To this union was born five children. Wallace passed away in 1990. During their marriage she worked at Western Electric, Minnesota Woolen and Chris Jensen laundry to help meet the needs of her family. She retired in 1992. In 1994, she met and married Sven Johnson and gained three step children. Sven passed away in 2005. In 2006, she moved into Matterhorn Ridge where she resided until 2021 where she then moved to Heritage Haven. She enjoyed time with family and friends and playing Skip-Bo, and endlessly watching baseball and football.

She is survived by daughters Janice (Harvey) Hell, of Wyoming, Sandra (Jim) Parsons, Nevada, and Carol (Walt) Rhoades, of Duluth; son Bill (Donna) Haney, California; step children Kaylen (Karen) Johnson, Koko (Rod) Eken; brothers, Jim (Bobbi) Gimpel, Duluth, Don Gimpel, Arizona. Also many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, cousins and neighbors who referred to her as second Mom.

She was preceded in death by her son Robert Haney in Vietnam, and by her brothers, Sheldon, Gerald, Kenny and sister, Betty. Also by her grandchildren, Steven, Sherri, Darcy, Stacy and her step daughter Kimmet and her husband Eldon Lawrence.

There will be a Celebration of Life on June 3, 2022 at Cremation Society of Minnesota Funeral Home, 4100 Grand Avenue, Duluth. Visitation will be from 2:00-3:00 pm, and the Celebration at 3:00 pm with Pastor Gary De Sha officiating. Inurnment at Oneota Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Christ Lutheran Church, Duluth.
