David Zander

Obituary of David B Zander

David Zander, storyteller, world traveler, advocate and dog lover began his journey in London, England on July 12, 1940 in the midst of a world war. He began his next great journey of discovery on March 8, 2022 at the age of 81.

David grew up in London where he attended school and earned his teaching certificate. His adventures started with a backpacking trip with friends through Scandinavia as a teenager. After receiving his degree, he taught in Kenya and the Bahamas, gaining a lifelong appreciation for the cultures of the world. This led him to the University of Minnesota where he studied anthropology with a focus on folk tales. He began to work with immigrants at the Center for Victims of Torture, where he met his soulmate, Kathy McCullough. He continued to work with immigrants throughout his career while continuing his teaching at the college level.

David was a lover of the outdoors. He and Kathy loved going up north and enjoying nature in all its beauty. He continued to travel after losing Kathy in 2014, sightseeing throughout the western and southwestern United States.

After retirement, David continued to advocate for anyone who asked for his help. He was an accomplished writer and was teaching himself to paint and do calligraphy. He enjoyed company and was happiest when he could tell his stories, which were legendary and always a learning experience.

David is survived by his mother-in-law Mary and her husband Rudy Reyes, his brother-in-law Dan McCullough (Vicki) and many friends.

A special thank you to the North Memorial Hospice Team and the staff at Covenant Living in Golden Valley. Per his request, no services will be held but a celebration of his life will be held this summer. Details to follow.

In lieu of flowers, David asked that donations in the name of David and Kathy McCullough-Zander be made to the following: YMCA Camp Menogyn, 55 Menogyn Trail, Grand Marais MN 55604 Minneapolis College Foundation Scholarship Fund, Minneapolis College, minneapolis.edu/give
