Obituary of Patrick Homer Murphy
Murphy, Patrick Homer Born in Detroit, MI on St. Patrick's Day, 1945. Died at home in Mound on December 27. Proud of his service in the Army as a medic, Pat served in Germany 1964-67. After discharge, he worked at VA hospitals in CA and MN to care for young Vietnam war vets. He then worked in a program for street youth as he completed his education at MCC in counseling. He worked at St. Mary's Hospital's adolescent chemical dependency program from 1971 to 1985, a career he loved. But his most-loved career followed, as stay-home dad to Thomas, whom he taught to garden, be best friends with dogs Dinah and Zippy, love the woods and lakeshores - and so much more. He created a family and home with wife Sheila (Hencir), son Thomas of Brooklyn, NY (partner Avery Gregory), and extended family in Arden Hills and St. Paul. He grew heirloom tomatoes and salad vegetables in abundance, with plenty to share. He enjoyed family gatherings and annual fall weekends at Clamshell Lake. Above all, he loved going with Sheila most summers to the BWCA, to catch and release, stargaze, watch for eagles and loons, and listen to the breeze in the tall pines. Pat believed in helping those who are hungry. Suggested memorial donations to Open your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless.
