Obituary of Jane Bauer Galbraith

Age 83 of Minneapolis, passed away on October 22, 2021. Jane is preceded in death by her husband Bill Galbraith and survived by their 3 children Alison (Jeff), Laura, Dan (Mary); 7 grandchildren Lincoln, Truman, Maya, Carter, Wil, Cole, Brady; sisters Betty & Verdelle; extended family Heidi & Pete; as well as many other friends and relatives.

Jane was born and raised with her 4 sisters on their family farm in Watertown, MN. When she was 17 she left the farm and moved to Minneapolis where she found work as a nanny to put herself through business school to become a legal secretary. It was there that she met Bill Galbraith. They married, bought a home and raised their family in the South Minneapolis neighborhood they loved and remained the rest of their lives

Jane was a tireless activist, champion of equality, women’s rights, civil rights and contributor to innumerable charities.  In addition to her family, her volunteering was her devoted passion. One of her proudest accomplishments was being part of a group of parents in south Minneapolis that persuaded the city's school board to voluntarily bus students between the Hale and Field Elementary Schools to make both schools more racially diverse. All of Jane’s children participated in this paired school program that began in 1971. She was very active in grassroots politics and received the DFL Woman of Distinction Award in 2006.  She also held a variety of volunteer board positions over the years. Animals and their welfare was another passion and her home always had dogs as members of the family. She also was an active foster home and fundraising volunteer with the Upper Midwest Great Dane Rescue. Humphrey, the last of her Great Danes, is another who is now grieving her loss.

It is difficult to adequately find words to describe such a wonderful woman who touched so many lives. Her family is truly blessed to have had such a strong, intelligent, dedicated role model and matriarch.
