Obituary of Edward J. Schwartzbauer
Schwartzbauer, Edward J. Age 90, of Edina, passed away peacefully on October 7th, 2021. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Helen of St. Paul, and is survived by his children, Paul James (Shannon), Janet Shallbetter (Dan), Mark, Tim, Dave and Tom, 11 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and by his brothers, Bernard and Robert (Karen). Ed graduated from the University of Minnesota Law School at age 23, where he was Note Editor of the Law Review, and second in his graduating class. He served as an Assistant Staff Judge Advocate in the U.S. Army for 3 years, then joined the Minneapolis law firm of Dorsey & Whitney. At Dorsey, he established the Environmental Law Department, and served as the firm's loss prevention counsel. He was President of the Hennepin County Bar Association, and served 3 consecutive terms on the Board of Governors of the State Bar Association. He served on the Minnesota Supreme Court's Board of Continuing Legal Education, and as its Chairperson from 1985 to 1991. He was instrumental in creating the lawyer-owned Attorneys Liability Assurance Society, Ltd (ALAS), and served on its Board of Directors from 1978 to 1988, by which time ALAS had become the world's largest insurer of lawyer's professional liability. In 1968, Ed created "Lawyers for [Eugene] McCarthy" and was elected as one of the 11 Minnesota delegates to the Democratic National Convention who supported McCarthy for President. Ed loved to sing, and had sung with several choral groups, including the Minneapolis Southside Singers, the Edina Chorale and the chorale at Colonial Church of Edina. He was a lecturer at the University of Minnesota's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and the St. Louis Park Community Education Senior Program. He was also active in community theater.
A Memorial Gathering will be held 4-8PM, Wednesday, October 20th at Cremation Society of MN, 7110 France Ave S. Edina, MN. Due to Covid 19 we ask that attendees be vaccinated or received a negative test result. All attendees are required to wear masks. Private Interment at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.
