Obituary of Donald Eugene Kubis
Donald “Gene” Kubis, 68, of Esko MN passed away on June 16th, 2021 at the Benedictine Nursing Home in Duluth. He was born to Donald and Verna Kubis in Jamestown, ND on October 17th, 1952. Gene attended Denfeld High School and worked for many years as a Sales Representative before retiring in 2012. He was married to his best friend and love of his life, Brenda, for 47 years. He had a wonderful life with his family and friends and enjoyed a multitude of hobbies and interests.
Gene so enjoyed coaching young kids and was an Esko baseball coach, soccer coach, hockey coach as well as a Cloquet, Hermantown, & Denfeld hockey coach. He loved the Asbury Church where he was a lay speaker and even traveled to Belize on a mission trip. Gene enjoyed listening to heavy metal music and went to many concerts - his favorites were Iron Maiden and Ozzy. He was known as Slash when he went to karaoke with his friends. Gene had many fun times at his Whiteface cabin and loved the time spent at Doug and Robbie’s cabin on Rose Lake.
He volunteered for hospice and was a big Vikings, Twins, and Wild fan. He loved his 3 boys, Brandon, Brent and Chris, and was so proud of them. He also adored his German Shepherd Brutus and many other pups including Norm and Maisy.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents Donald Kubis and Verna Louze and his parents-in-law Richard and Renee Johnson.
He is survived by his wife Brenda; his sons Brandon, Brent and Chris; his sisters Debbie Hobbs and Sharon Tucek; his sister-in-laws Becky (John) Miller and Barbara Gilbert; his brother-in-law Brian Johnson; many nieces and nephews; and his special friends Rick and Betty Olson.
He met many special people that helped him recover from a broken neck, fractured hip, etc and so many wonderful health care and nursing home caregivers - he would say when asked how he was, “It’s just another day in paradise.”
Gene’s Celebration of Life will be held at the Asbury United Methodist Church on June 24th at 11am. There will be a visitation an hour prior. Arrangements made by the Cremation Society of Minnesota- Duluth.
