Carol Galazen

Obituary of Carol M. Galazen

Carol was the most loving and accepting, non-judgmental, encouraging person you could ever hope to know. She was a great listener and always saw the good in everyone. She passed away Tuesday, April 20th, 2021, surrounded by family. Born on December 25th, 1931, to Pete and Betty Hultman, “Christmas” Carol was raised in the tiny town of Herbster, Wisconsin.

She graduated from South Shore High School in Port Wing, Wisconsin, where she met the love of her life, Raymond Galazen. Ray was voted Prom King his senior year and chose Carol to be his Queen, and she remained so for the rest of their lives together.

Carol attended community college and became a Health Unit Coordinator at Miller-Dwan Hospital, fulfilling a life-long dream to work in the medical field.

She was actively involved in the West Duluth American Legion Post 71 Auxiliary and also Saint James Catholic Church.

She most especially loved being a mom and grandmother, and nobody gave better hugs. She hugged you with her entire being, oftentimes jumping for joy while doing so. Oh, how we will miss those hugs!

Carol was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Linnea Johnson; husband, Ray; and son, David.

She is survived by her children, Daniel (Char) Galazen, Karen (John) Gunderson; daughter-in-law and angel Diana Galazen, Kevin (Jeanne) Galazen, and Diane (Kevin) Tobin, all of Duluth; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren.

Many thanks to the wonderful staff at Keystone Bluffs and Kindred Hospice of Duluth for their kindness and supportive care over this last year. Special shout-outs to her favorite caregiver, Mason, and loving friend Shirley, also from Keystone. Love and thanks to devoted niece Susie, who wrote “Auntie” a letter every week, without fail, for more than a decade.

To all the caregivers caring for loved ones, residents and patients suffering from dementia, we say we see you, we understand. Keep going and thank you for never giving up on them.

Carol believed strongly in always giving back. In place of flowers, please consider donating to one of your favorite non-profits in her name.

For safety reasons, a private family mass will be held on Monday, April 26th, 2021, at the Cremation Society of Minnesota in West Duluth, with Father John Petrich officiating.
