Obituary of Mae I. Farr

Farr, Mae I. (Lang) Age 101, of Richfield. With heavy hearts and love knowing no bounds we share that Mae departed for a glorious spot in heaven December 30, 2014. Her final days at home were peaceful and we are confident she shared an ultimate reunion with the love of her life, Cecil, 46 years to the exact day he left for heaven. There is no doubt her heart is again whole. We will love her to the ends of the earth and await a time when we will see her kind smile and baby blue eyes again. Born February 22, 1913 to Andrew and Mary Lang near Evansville, MN on the family farm. Nine of thirteen children born survived childhood. Both parents died within 6 months of each other in 1930 at the height of the Great Depression. Mae completed as much schooling available and graduated 8th grade. She joined older sister Stella in Minneapolis where Mae secured work at Sears Roebuck Company. A year later youngest sister Pherne joined deciding they could "all starve together". In fact they would often skip meals to save a nickel for the street car in order to go dancing. Without air conditioning on hot nights they would sleep under a railroad bridge. They also scrimped to send Pherne to High School. At the same time the brothers struggled to keep the farm going. Difficult times made a very closely-knit family. Mae met Cecil at Sears and married June 14, 1941. They spent their honeymoon clearing land at their new cabin on Clearwater Lake. Mae became a mom at the age of 40 when their only child, Frank D. was born. She had many amazing mom moments including helping Cecil start and run the Ski-O-Rama (reward) Program for the Star Tribune newspaper carriers, being a hockey mom and making fresh squeezed orange juice every day. Cabin life was important to Mae. She spent entire summers there with her family. They enjoyed outdoor living, entertained, and taught many young people how to ski. Mae skied until she was 75, started jet skiing at 87 with her last ride at age 93. Mae worked at the Star Tribune from 1970-1982. She started traveling with her sisters which included spending winters in Arizona, to hot air balloon rides in Africa and as far as the Wall of China. She volunteered at the Swedish Institute, American Legion Auxiliary, and Veterans Home. She donated to numerous organizations. Memorials preferred to donor's choice, Fraser, Veterans, Cancer, Heart, Lung or Osteoporosis organizations. Memorial Service Saturday, January 17th. Visitation at 10, Service at 11.
