Obituary of Maybelle Rose Skou

Maybelle Rose Skou, 103, died on Jan. 3, 2015, at North Shore Hospital in Grand Marais, Minn. Maybelle was born on May 12, 1911, to Henry and Bridget Rogers in Centuria, Wis., the middle of seven children. After attending school in River Falls and receiving her Teaching Certificate, she taught in rural one-room schools, while living at home to help her parents on the family farm. Maybelle married her sweetheart, Edmund Nels Skou from Luck, Wis., on June 19, 1943 in Fort Lewis, Wash. As a military bride, Maybelle and her husband Ed first lived in Tacoma, Wash. and Salina, Kan., then back in Centuria, Wis., before eventually settling on the North Shore in 1946 and making their home in the "big red house" in Schroeder, where she lived until moving to CareFree Living in Silver Bay this past September. Along with being a full-time mom to their two daughters, she helped her husband with their businesses, first with the sawmills and the gas/service station, and in the latter years, the "shop", until Edmund's death in March of 1993. Maybelle was preceded in death by her husband, Edmund; her parents, Henry and Bridget Rogers; and all of her siblings, Grace, Kenneth, Joseph, Florence, Gordon and Bernice. She is survived by her daughters, Cheryl (Larry) Buckman of Schroeder, Minn., Sheila (Tom Swanson) Fryberger of Duluth; her grandchildren, Alisha (Colton Iverson) Buckman of Tofte, Patrick Fryberger of Duluth, and Caitlin Fryberger of Duluth; and her sister-in-law, Violet Tefft of Minneapolis Maybelle lived a long and full life, was well loved by her family and friends, and her Irish wit and smile will be missed by everyone she touched. A special thanks to all the people who made her life easier the last few years, it was greatly appreciated. Also, thanks to everyone at North Shore Hospital in Grand Marais, and CareFree Living in Silver Bay. MEMORIAL SERVICE: 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015, in St. John's Catholic Church in Grand Marais, Minn. Memorials preferred.
