Obituary of Marguerite Mary Smith

Marguerite Mary Smith, 77, died peacefully with family by her side on May 31, 2015, after a brief struggle with cancer. Marguerite was born May 19, 1938, in Widnes, England, the daughter of William and Sarah Colford. Marguerite was swept off her feet by the love of her life, Jack Smith, while he was stationed in England serving in the air force in 1956. They were married Dec. 1, 1956 and Marguerite made the journey across the big pond to their new life in the states, where they eventually settled in Duluth. They raised three wonderful children, Carl, Robert, and Jackie. In addition to raising their three children, Marguerite provided daycare for many years on the Vaux Rd. in Pike Lake and adored every minute of it. Jack and Marguerite retired in 1985 and began wintering in Mesa, Ariz., up until this last winter. She was a phenomenal mother, grandmother (Nan), and friend. Those who were fortunate enough to have known and loved Marguerite will remember her for her adorable English accent, contagious laugh, huge heart, and never-ending energy. She loved to tell stories while sipping on a "nice cup of tea," and when she wasn't talking, she was singing one of her favorite Patsy Cline songs in her angelic voice, which we will never forget. She was the light of our family and will remain the light, even in death, as she has left us with so many great memories to cherish. Marguerite is survived by her husband Jack Smith; sister Kate Fox; sister Joan Lasby; son Carl (Colleen) Smith of Elk River, Minn.; son Robert (Darlyce) Smith of Duluth; daughter Jackie (Larry) Fiecke of Winsted, Minn.; many nieces and nephews, six grandchildren and soon to be seven great-grand children. GATHERING OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS: 2 to 3 p.m. with luncheon to follow from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, June 6, at the Duluth Chapel, 4100 Grand Ave. Duluth. All who knew and loved Marguerite are welcome.
